Scotland's ancient capital city, Edinburgh, is the perfect place to base yourself for your Homecoming Scotland 2009 experience because...

  • Scotland's greatest poet, Robert Burns took Edinburgh by storm; extremely popular with the ladies, he effectively achieved today's equivalent of stardom. Lady Stair's House is an Edinburgh museum celebrating Scotland's literary trinity of Burns, Scott and Stevenson. Every year, on 25 January, the anniversary of his birth, Scots celebrate Burns Night with a Burns Supper, a traditional celebration consisting of speeches, music and song dedicated to the poet's life and work.
  • Some of the most famous golf courses in the world are to be found within an hour of Edinburgh but the first game of golf was played at Bruntsfield Links in Edinburgh in 1456. The Golf East Lothian Passport gives you the opportunity to play on some of Scotland's most famous courses, such as Gullane No 2 & No 3 (www.golfeastlothian.com).
  • The Scotch Whisky Experience on Castlehill, Edinburgh is a place to discover the secrets of the "water of life" with tours and tastings. You can also join the Scotch Malt Whisky Society which is the world's leading specialist in single malt, single cask and cask strength whiskies and has two Edinburgh clubs on Queen Street and The Vaults, Leith with regular fascinating events (www.smws.co.uk).
  • The Scottish Enlightenment was the period in 18th century Scotland characterised by an outpouring of intellectual and scientific accomplishments by figures such as; Adam Smith, Sir Walter Scott and David Hume. An English visitor to Edinburgh during the heyday of the Scottish Enlightenment remarked: "Here I stand at what is called the Cross of Edinburgh, and can, in a few minutes, take 50 men of genius and learning by the hand".
  • General Register House on Edinburgh's Princes Street is home to the ScotlandsPeople Centre, the place to start your explorations in to your Scottish Ancestry. During the Homecoming Scotland 2009 celebrations there will be exhibitions on famous Scots tracing back their Scottish roots.
